Timeline

1910:
Edward VII served as King of England for nine years and died from a heart attack on 6th May at Buckingham Palace. He was buried in the Royal Vault at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. His second son, George V, succeeded him.

1911:
George V crowned King of England on 22nd June at Westminster Abbey, Middlesex – the first of the Windsor line.

1914-1918:
Britain declared war on Austria and Germany which saw action in Europe, the Far East and Africa, as well as at sea, and for the first time, in the air.

1936:
George V died from bronchitis on 20th January at his home in Sandringham, Norfolk and his son, Edward VIII, succeeded him, at the age of 41. George served for 26 years and was buried in St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, sharing a tomb with Queen Mary. However Edward VIII was never crowned king and abdicated as he wished to marry an American, Mrs. Wallis Simpson, who was deemed unlikely to be acceptable as Queen. Edward was therefore never crowned king and after he renounced the throne on 11th December, in one of the shortest reigns in British history, his brother George VI succeeded him.

1937:
George VI crowned King of England on 12th May at Westminster Abbey, Middlesex.

1939:
The German invasion of Poland led to Declaration of War by Britain on 3rd September. World War II brought great hardship to Britain and in 1940 a German Invasion was prevented in the “Battle of Britain” fought in the air. Italy also declared war on Britain.

1945:
The Second World War ended with the fall of the German Third Reich and the capture of Berlin. Japan also surrendered.

1946:
The United Nations began its first session in London which led to the formation of NATO.

1952:
Elizabeth II succeeded as Queen of England after the death of her father, King George VI, who died in his sleep on 6th February at Sandringham, Norfolk. He was 56 years old and was buried in the Royal Vault at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. He had served on the throne of England for 16 years. Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of England on 2nd June at Westminster Abbey, Middlesex.

John Michael Bayntun Starky was born on the 18th October 1909 at Brackenfield, Amberley, New Zealand and inherited the house and farm when his father, John, died in 1944.

He was generally known throughout his life as Michael. He married Margaret Suzanne Wells in 1955, the daughter of Charles Valentine Tighe Wells and Dorothy Margaret Cardale of Adelaide, South Australia. She was known during her lifetime as Suzanne.The marriage took place at St. Andrews Church, Walkerville, South Australia on the 23rd April 1955. Michael was aged 45 at the time and his bride was 25 years old

Their eldest son, Andrew (1956 - 2017) married Kathryn Joyce Laing and had one son: Daniel Bayntun Starky.
Their daughter, Barbara, married Geoffrey Arnold Anderson and have two children: Benjamin Geoffrey Bayntun Anderson and Margaret Christine Stewart Anderson.

John Michael Starky died from a coronary on the 18th November 1971 at Brackenfield at the age of 62.

There is a plaque (pictured above) in St. Nicholas Church, Bromham, Wiltshire, England, honouring John Michael Bayntun Starky.
