The Bayntun family – or de Beinton as they were known in Anglo Saxon times – may have crossed the channel from Normandy to Wiltshire, England early in the 12th century.
There is a theory that the family are descendants from the Ancient Kings of Denmark, however so far no proof of this is freely available.
Several judicious marriages took place in medieval times to women whose families had very impressive pedigrees dating back to Alfred the Great, King of England and Charlemagne, Emperor of the West – some of which are listed below.
There is no direct connection between Alfred The Great and Charlemagne. But Elfrida, the daughter of Alfred married Baldwin II, Count of Flanders and a descendant of this marriage was Matilda of Flanders who married William The Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King of England, who was also a descendant of Charlemagne.
